EDISON, NJ – On Sunday, October 27th, Delco Development’s Hampton Inn Woodbridge team participated in The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K at Raritan Center in Edison, NJ.
Hundreds of participants supported the well-known American Cancer Society Event that unites almost 300 communities across the nation to celebrate breast cancer survivors and to raise awareness for reducing the risk of breast cancer. Funds raised by Making Strides Events across the nation benefit the American Cancer Society’s efforts to fund research to fight the disease, promote education and awareness of breast cancer risks, and fund services for breast cancer prevention; such as, providing access to mammograms for women who need them. This is the first year that Delco Development of Willingboro and the Hampton Inn of Woodbridge participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Edison, NJ Event.
“Delco Development and the Hampton Inn Woodbridge are proud to participate in community events like the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K,” said Meghan Lafferty Goins, The Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for Delco Development. “We have strong ties to our local community and are happy to be part of such an inspiring event that brings people together.”
The event had 446 teams, with 3151 registered individual walkers total, and raised $326,261.48 through sponsorships, donations, and team fundraising.
“Delco rolled out a Community Outreach Program called DelCommunity this past January so that we could experience community events like this together as a team,” said Goins. “There is a huge personal reward for us, our employees and the community, as well, when we participate.”
History About Making Strides (from makingstrides.acsevents.org)
In 1984, Massachusetts cancer survivor Margery Gould Rath wanted to find a way to celebrate fellow cancer survivors by raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Working with a committee of fellow survivors and other volunteers, “Margie” created a “move-along-a-thon” called Making Strides Against Cancer to bring people together in an event to move the fight against cancer forward. The first event, held in Boston, drew 200 participants and instantly became an annual city tradition.
In 1993, the event officially became known as the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, attracting 4,000 walkers at events in Boston and in Manchester, New Hampshire. Since then, Margie’s vision has inspired 8 million walkers to participate in Making Strides events in more than 270 communities across the country, raising more than $460 million to fight breast cancer. Margie remained a dedicated Making Strides volunteer until she lost her battle with cancer in 2001.
The progress we’re making because of Making Strides, and supporters like Margie, is nothing short of remarkable. But it’s no time to rest. That’s why we need your help. More walkers mean the next big breast cancer research breakthrough. More walkers means free lodging and rides to treatment for breast cancer patients who need it. More fundraising means more survivors will celebrate more birthdays. To join the fight please make a donation by clicking here.
